“Mutant” is considered a pejorative in this universe. While mutants clearly exist, people don’t like to talk about them, or even use the word to describe them. Instead more politically-correct versions like “super-normal” or “highly-powered” are used instead. Some people (those primarily in support of mutant rights) want to reclaim the word, or substitute options like “homo superior.”
